Mobile app development: choosing between an app store app, a PWA and the web

Plenty of companies ask for “an app” when what they need is a fast website customers can install on their phone. We help you decide on concrete criteria (app stores, push notifications, offline use, device hardware) before you invest. We haven’t published a native app store case yet; we do have installable web apps in production.

Common mistakes before commissioning an app

These are the missteps we see most when someone shows up with the decision already made:

  • Building an app for a service people use twice a year: few install it, and those who do delete it.

  • Forgetting that an app store listing doesn’t rank on Google. If customers search for you there, you still need a website.

  • Budgeting for development only, and not for developer accounts, store review or keeping up with every new iOS and Android release.

  • Building two separate apps, one for iPhone and one for Android, when a cross-platform codebase or an installable web app would have done the job.

  • Asking for push notifications without knowing what you’ll send or how often.

The closest thing to an app we have in production

It isn’t on the App Store or Google Play. It’s a website that installs to the home screen and can send push notifications, and for many businesses that’s all they need.

A tour operator in Medellín and the Antioquia region. Travelers browse tours and news on their phones, in English or Spanish, often while already on the road.

    What we did

We made it installable as a web app: a manifest with adaptive icons, full-screen launch, a service worker and push notifications for new articles. It also has an AI travel assistant that hands the conversation off to WhatsApp.

Do you really need an app in the stores?

Sometimes you do. These are the signals we look for.

A store app is worth it if…

  • Users open it several times a week: ordering, appointments, tracking a service.
  • It needs Bluetooth, NFC, sensors or background processing that browsers don’t allow, especially on iPhone.
  • Your field team needs it to work for hours offline and sync later.
  • Being listed on the App Store and Google Play is part of the trust your customers expect.

A website or PWA will do if…

  • Most customers find you on Google or through ads and make up their minds in a single visit.
  • What you show is a catalog, information, bookings or forms.
  • You can’t sustain two store listings, their reviews and an update for every new OS version.

Responsive site vs. PWA vs. cross-platform vs. native

Four ways onto your customer’s phone, with very different costs and limits.

  • Responsive site

    How users get it
A link or a Google search.
    Shows up on Google
    Yes.
    Push notifications
    No.
    Hardware and background work
    Whatever the browser allows.
    Updates
    Live for everyone on deploy.
    Best for
Winning customers from search and closing the sale.
  • How users get it
A link, then an icon on the home screen.
    Shows up on Google
    Yes: it’s still a website.
    Push notifications
Yes. On iPhone, from iOS 16.4 and only once added to the home screen.
    Hardware and background work
Camera and location; Bluetooth and NFC are very limited on iPhone.
    Updates
    Live for everyone on deploy.
    Best for
Repeat customers who don’t need a store listing.
  • Flutter or React Native

    How users get it
Download from the App Store and Google Play.
    Shows up on Google
No; you need a separate website.
    Push notifications
    Yes.
    Hardware and background work
Nearly everything, sometimes through native modules.
    Updates
Every release goes through store review.
    Best for
Frequently used apps with one team covering iOS and Android.
  • Native (Swift, Kotlin)

    How users get it
Download from the App Store and Google Play.
    Shows up on Google
No; you need a separate website.
    Push notifications
    Yes.
    Hardware and background work
    Everything the operating system offers.
    Updates
Every release goes through store review, times two apps.
    Best for
Apps that push performance or deep phone integration.

What we pin down with you before building

These answers pick the technology. Without them, any recommendation is a guess.

  • Who uses it, and how often

A customer who opens it once to get a quote is a different problem from a driver who opens it fifty times a day.

  • What it needs from the phone

Camera, location, Bluetooth, NFC or background work. Each one changes what a web app can and can’t do.

  • What happens with no signal

Whether showing the last loaded data is enough, or whether users must capture data offline for hours and sync it later.

  • What you’ll notify people about

Alerts with a clear reason: a new article, a status change, a reminder. Pointless notifications are how apps get uninstalled.

  • Accounts and data

Sign-in, permissions and where personal data is stored, plus the privacy policy both app stores require.

  • Who maintains it

New iOS and Android versions ship every year. We agree up front on who updates, tests and publishes.

How we take an app idea to production

  1. 1

    Real-world use

We talk to the people who’d use it and map their tasks on the phone, step by step.

  2. 2

    Platform decision

With those tasks in hand we weigh web, PWA, cross-platform and native, and recommend one, with our reasons.

  3. 3

A first version you can measure

Where possible we start with an installable web app: it ships sooner, updates without store review and shows whether people actually come back.

  4. 4

    Next step, backed by data

If usage shows you need a store app, we plan that step with what we learned, without rebuilding the backend.

We've worked with Crece Virtual on several web design projects for our Barranquilla operation. Their team demonstrated a solid command of both WordPress and React, adapting to the specific needs of each project based on our technical and functional requirements. What we value most is the quality of the codebase they deliver. Each project has a clean and well-organized structure, which has greatly facilitated updates and the addition of new features when needed. The technical documentation they provide is clear and useful for our internal team. Communication throughout the entire process was smooth and professional.

Working with Crece Virtual transformed how we acquire clients. From the outset, they understood our business and guided us through everything: digital strategy, website architecture, and domain selection. The WordPress site, with a custom theme and widgets created in Elementor, turned out exactly as we needed: fast, clear, and designed to make requesting quotes effortless. Thanks to technical SEO, link building, and Google Ads campaigns in Medellín, our quote requests increased several times over, stabilizing at nearly 500% higher than at the beginning. The automation that sends leads from WhatsApp to Google Sheets, complete with all the data and UTM parameters, allows us to better measure sales and repeat purchases. Furthermore, their hosting, domain, and Google Workspace services have been reliable, and whenever we need support, they're always there with quick and clear answers.

We have been working with Crece Virtual for several months now, and it has been a great experience. They built our website in Next.js, and it turned out super fast and professional. The best part is that they didn't leave us on our own after delivery: every month they make updates and improvements, and when we need something urgently, they always respond very quickly. Their support has been impeccable. In addition to the website, they manage our Google Ads campaigns and SEO. Honestly, everything has worked very well. The campaigns bring in good leads and have us well positioned on Google and Bing. They are very professional but also very approachable, always explaining everything clearly. I recommend them without hesitation.

Mobile app FAQ

Do I need an app, or is a website enough?

If customers search, compare and decide in one visit, a fast website does more: it ranks on Google and doesn’t ask anyone to install anything. An app pays off when people use it often or it needs phone features browsers don’t offer. Often the right order is website first and app later, if the numbers call for it.

Flutter or a PWA?

A PWA is your website, installable and able to send notifications: one codebase, no app stores and instant updates. Flutter builds real iOS and Android apps from one codebase, with broader access to the phone, but every release goes through store review. If your use case fits within what browsers allow, a PWA is usually cheaper to keep running.

Do you publish apps on the App Store and Google Play?

We haven’t published a native app store case yet, and we’d rather say so up front. If your project needs one, we walk you through what it takes: developer accounts in your company’s name (Apple charges an annual fee, Google a one-time fee), a privacy policy, review of every release and testing on real devices.

Do PWAs work well on iPhone?

They work, with caveats. Since iOS 16.4, a web app added to the home screen can receive push notifications, but Safari restricts Bluetooth, NFC and background work more than Android does. If most of your audience is on iPhone, we test on those devices before deciding.

Can you work with our team in the US?

Yes. We’re in Colombia, on UTC−5 all year, which lines up with Eastern time in the winter and Central time in the summer. Planning calls happen over video, and you can test builds on your own phone as they’re ready.
