Set up well, your site loads faster and your server takes fewer hits; set up badly, it can break your email or trap the site in a redirect loop.

Common mistakes when turning on Cloudflare

We see these often when someone flips the switch in a hurry:

  • Email stopped arriving after the nameserver change because MX or TXT records were left behind, or the mail server ended up behind the proxy.

  • The site is stuck in a redirect loop because SSL is set to “Flexible” while the server already forces HTTPS.

  • The domain stopped resolving because DNSSEC was still on at the registrar when the nameservers changed.

  • The cache serves stale pages or, worse, shows one logged-in user’s page to another visitor.

  • Security rules block real customers, Googlebot or your payment processor’s webhooks.

  • The origin server’s real IP is still public, so attacks go straight to it and skip Cloudflare entirely.

What Cloudflare does, and what it doesn’t

Every DNS record in Cloudflare runs in one of two modes. With the proxy on (the orange cloud), web traffic flows through Cloudflare’s network: that’s where the certificate, caching and security rules apply, and your server’s IP stays hidden. In DNS only mode, Cloudflare just answers where your server is. Only A, AAAA and CNAME records can be proxied; MX and TXT records for email are always DNS only. What Cloudflare can’t do is fix a site that’s slow under the hood: if every page takes a long time to build on the server, caching helps with static files, but the underlying problem is still there.

What we configure in Cloudflare

Every setting depends on how your site is built and where it’s hosted.

  • Clean DNS

    A full inventory of records before the switch, the proxy only where it adds value, and no orphaned records from old providers.

  • End-to-end SSL

    “Full (strict)” mode with a valid certificate on the origin server, HTTPS redirects and HSTS once the site is ready.

  • Caching with rules

    Static files cached, with exclusions for the cart, admin area and personalized pages so nobody sees someone else’s content.

  • Security rules that fit

    Firewall rules, rate limits and bot controls that don’t lock out Google or your payment processor’s notifications.

  • A protected origin

    The server firewall only accepts web traffic from Cloudflare, so nobody can bypass the protection through the direct IP.

  • Email left intact

    MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records copied and verified, with the mail server kept out of the proxy.

What it looks like on sites you can check

Cloudflare is the tool we use to run DNS for most of our clients, and not every site uses it the same way. On Maoke Travel and Liceo del Caribe, two sites that carry our credit in the footer, web traffic goes through Cloudflare’s proxy before it reaches the server. On Azabache Producciones, NOI Coworking and this very site, Cloudflare only answers DNS, and visitors go straight to Vercel, which brings its own network and certificate. The homepage of Más Colombia, a digital news outlet whose infrastructure we work on, is served from Cloudflare’s cache. We checked each site’s response headers on October 13, 2026, and you can do the same.

How we move your domain to Cloudflare without downtime

    Inventory

    We export every record from your current DNS, including email, Google or Microsoft verification records and forgotten subdomains.

  2. 2

    Zone prep

    We create the zone in Cloudflare, compare it record by record against the original and decide which records get the proxy.

  3. 3

    DNSSEC and SSL

    If DNSSEC was on, we turn it off at the registrar before the switch and set the right SSL mode ahead of time.

  4. 4

    Nameserver change

    We update the nameservers at the registrar and watch the site and email while the change propagates.

  5. 5

    Fine-tuning

    We roll out caching and security rules gradually, review the firewall logs and turn DNSSEC back on from Cloudflare.

Cloudflare FAQ

What can Cloudflare actually fix on my site?

Fast, reliable DNS, an SSL certificate, caching of static files close to the visitor, protection against denial-of-service attacks and rules to slow down bots and abuse. It doesn’t replace updating your site or fix slow code: it’s a layer in front of the server, not a substitute for maintenance.

Will Cloudflare affect my email?

Only if it’s misconfigured. Cloudflare’s proxy is for web traffic: MX and TXT records always work as DNS only. Problems show up when some email records don’t get copied during the nameserver change, or when the mail server’s hostname (say, mail.yourdomain.com) ends up proxied. That’s the first thing we check.

Can you set it up without taking my site down?

Yes, with proper prep: a complete record inventory, DNSSEC turned off before the switch and the right SSL mode from minute one. While the change propagates, some visitors reach you through the old DNS and others through Cloudflare, and all of them must see the same site. That’s why we don’t shut anything down on the old side until the switch is confirmed.

Is Cloudflare’s free plan enough?

For many sites, yes: it includes DNS, a certificate, caching and baseline attack protection. Paid plans add things like managed firewall rules and image optimization. We decide based on your site’s real traffic and risks, not out of habit.

Does Cloudflare help with SEO?

Indirectly: a faster, more stable site helps the visitor experience and your Core Web Vitals, which Google takes into account. But a bad setup can block Googlebot or serve errors, so after turning it on we review the firewall logs and Search Console.
