Shared hosting for WordPress and PHP sites, with the limits spelled out

It’s what we use for WordPress and PHP sites: the provider maintains the server, and we manage your domain and DNS. Based on real usage numbers, we’ll tell you whether your site fits on a shared plan, set it up properly and show you how to spot when it starts to outgrow it.

What sharing a server really means

On shared hosting, your site lives on the same machine as many others. Every account has caps on CPU, memory, concurrent processes and file count, even when the plan says “unlimited”: what’s usually unlimited is disk space or bandwidth, not computing power. In exchange, you never patch the operating system or configure the web server; the host does that. What happens inside your account is still on whoever runs the site: WordPress, its plugins, the PHP version, passwords and any backups you want to keep off the server.

Signs your site has outgrown shared hosting

If two or more of these sound familiar, check your resource usage before you upgrade:

  • Your control panel warns about CPU or process limits, or the host has suspended the account for overuse.

  • The site is fast at night and sluggish during business hours, even though nothing changed.

  • Errors like “503” or “resource limit reached” show up right in the middle of a campaign or launch.

  • You need something the plan won’t allow: a specific PHP version, Node.js or heavy background jobs.

  • Your store is growing, and the cart or checkout drags during peak ordering hours.

Is shared hosting enough for your site?

For plenty of sites, yes. Here’s what we look at before recommending it.

It’s enough if…

  • Your site is a company website, a portfolio, a blog or a WordPress install with a handful of plugins.
  • Traffic is moderate, without big spikes from campaigns or launches.
  • You don’t need to install software on the server or have root access.
  • You’d rather have the host handle the operating system and server security.

Look elsewhere if…

  • You run a WooCommerce store with a large catalog, lots of daily orders or traffic spikes.
  • Your app needs Node.js, queues, heavy scheduled jobs or a large database.
  • Your site is built with Next.js: for that we use Vercel, the platform designed for the framework.
When a VPS makes more sense

How we set up your shared hosting

A well-configured shared plan goes further than you’d expect.

  • HTTPS everywhere

An active SSL certificate, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects and no mixed content triggering browser warnings.

  • Domain and DNS in order

We manage your domain and its DNS, usually on Cloudflare, which can also serve static files from its cache.

  • Backups you can actually restore

We check what the plan backs up, where copies are stored and whether they restore; if needed, we add an off-server copy.

  • A supported PHP version

We run a PHP version that still gets security fixes and works with your WordPress install and plugins.

  • Caching before a bigger server

We turn on caching and look at heavy images and plugins before blaming the host for a slow site.

  • Usage you can see

We track how much CPU and memory your account uses, so moving to a VPS is a decision backed by data.

We've worked with Crece Virtual on several web design projects for our Barranquilla operation. Their team demonstrated a solid command of both WordPress and React, adapting to the specific needs of each project based on our technical and functional requirements. What we value most is the quality of the codebase they deliver. Each project has a clean and well-organized structure, which has greatly facilitated updates and the addition of new features when needed. The technical documentation they provide is clear and useful for our internal team. Communication throughout the entire process was smooth and professional.

Working with Crece Virtual transformed how we acquire clients. From the outset, they understood our business and guided us through everything: digital strategy, website architecture, and domain selection. The WordPress site, with a custom theme and widgets created in Elementor, turned out exactly as we needed: fast, clear, and designed to make requesting quotes effortless. Thanks to technical SEO, link building, and Google Ads campaigns in Medellín, our quote requests increased several times over, stabilizing at nearly 500% higher than at the beginning. The automation that sends leads from WhatsApp to Google Sheets, complete with all the data and UTM parameters, allows us to better measure sales and repeat purchases. Furthermore, their hosting, domain, and Google Workspace services have been reliable, and whenever we need support, they're always there with quick and clear answers.

We have been working with Crece Virtual for several months now, and it has been a great experience. They built our website in Next.js, and it turned out super fast and professional. The best part is that they didn't leave us on our own after delivery: every month they make updates and improvements, and when we need something urgently, they always respond very quickly. Their support has been impeccable. In addition to the website, they manage our Google Ads campaigns and SEO. Honestly, everything has worked very well. The campaigns bring in good leads and have us well positioned on Google and Bing. They are very professional but also very approachable, always explaining everything clearly. I recommend them without hesitation.

Shared hosting FAQ

Is shared hosting good enough for a small business website?

Usually, yes, when the site is a company website or a simple WordPress install with moderate traffic and you don’t need to install anything on the server. That covers many small businesses, freelancers and single-location companies. If you’re unsure, your account’s resource usage over the last few weeks tells you more than any rule of thumb.

What happens when my traffic grows?

First come slowdowns at peak hours and usage warnings; after that, errors or temporary suspensions. Before upgrading, it’s worth reviewing caching, images and plugins, because the bottleneck is often the site rather than the server. If you still need more capacity, the next step is a VPS.

Can I move to a VPS later without losing anything?

Yes. A site on shared hosting can be copied in full (files, database and mailboxes) to a VPS. We test it at the new server before switching DNS, so your site stays online during the move.

Is shared hosting less secure?

Not by itself: a good host isolates accounts from each other. The most common risk is inside your own account: outdated plugins, weak passwords or themes downloaded from unofficial sources. That’s why ongoing site maintenance matters as much as the plan you pick.

Can I run my email on the same plan?

Yes. Many plans include mailboxes, and they work for small teams. The downside is that email shares a server and sending reputation with other sites, and if the hosting goes down, so does your email. If your team relies on email to close sales, a separate email platform is usually the safer choice.

Will your site fit on shared hosting?

Send us your URL and, if you know it, your current plan. We’ll tell you whether it’s enough, what to adjust or whether it’s time for a VPS.
