English and Spanish, on Eastern-friendly hours

Bilingual SEO in New York: an English and Spanish site Google understands

For New York businesses that serve customers in both languages, or attract visitors from abroad. We set up the URL structure, language tags and content for each version so Google shows every searcher the right one. Our team works remotely from Colombia.

A city of many languages, not just two

In New York City, 47.7% of residents age 5 and older speak a language other than English at home. Spanish is the largest group at 22.6%, followed by other Indo-European languages (13.1%) and Asian or Pacific Island languages (8.8%), according to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2020–2024, table DP02: data.census.gov/table/ACSDP5Y2024.DP02?g=160XX00US3651000). The takeaway for a bilingual site is simple: Spanish opens up a large audience, English is still the front door for most people, and both versions deserve the same care.

Translate, adapt or write from scratch

Three ways to get Spanish content, and when each one makes sense.

  • Literal translation

    What it is
Converting the English copy into Spanish sentence by sentence.
    Keywords
The English ones, translated; often nobody searches that way.
    Best for
Legal or technical text that must say exactly the same thing.
    Risk
Pages that never rank because they answer searches nobody makes.
  • What it is
Rewriting the message for a Spanish-speaking reader, with their terms and examples.
    Keywords
Researched in Spanish: the term, the intent or the word order may change.
    Best for
    Service, location and FAQ pages.
    Risk
Needs someone who writes well in both languages.
  • Original content

    What it is
Writing for a search that only exists in one language.
    Keywords
Come straight from research in that language, with no counterpart in the other.
    Best for
Questions specific to one audience, like a guide for newcomers from another country.
    Risk
More upkeep: each page has its own update cycle.

A general guide. On every project we check which pages each language actually calls for before deciding.

The technical side of a bilingual site

What tells Google your two versions are the same business in two languages.

  • One URL per language

Each version gets its own address, such as /es/, which is what Google recommends so it can index both.

  • Correct hreflang

Tags that link every page to its counterpart, plus a default version for everyone else.

  • No automatic redirects

We don’t send visitors to a language based on location: Google advises against it because it may not crawl every version.

  • A useful language switcher

A visible link on every page that goes to its counterpart in the other language, not to the homepage.

  • Metadata in each language

Titles, descriptions and structured data written for each version, not copied from the other.

  • Reporting by version

Search Console and GA4 split by language to compare impressions, clicks and leads.

We've worked with Crece Virtual on several web design projects for our Barranquilla operation. Their team demonstrated a solid command of both WordPress and React, adapting to the specific needs of each project based on our technical and functional requirements. What we value most is the quality of the codebase they deliver. Each project has a clean and well-organized structure, which has greatly facilitated updates and the addition of new features when needed. The technical documentation they provide is clear and useful for our internal team. Communication throughout the entire process was smooth and professional.

Working with Crece Virtual transformed how we acquire clients. From the outset, they understood our business and guided us through everything: digital strategy, website architecture, and domain selection. The WordPress site, with a custom theme and widgets created in Elementor, turned out exactly as we needed: fast, clear, and designed to make requesting quotes effortless. Thanks to technical SEO, link building, and Google Ads campaigns in Medellín, our quote requests increased several times over, stabilizing at nearly 500% higher than at the beginning. The automation that sends leads from WhatsApp to Google Sheets, complete with all the data and UTM parameters, allows us to better measure sales and repeat purchases. Furthermore, their hosting, domain, and Google Workspace services have been reliable, and whenever we need support, they're always there with quick and clear answers.

We have been working with Crece Virtual for several months now, and it has been a great experience. They built our website in Next.js, and it turned out super fast and professional. The best part is that they didn't leave us on our own after delivery: every month they make updates and improvements, and when we need something urgently, they always respond very quickly. Their support has been impeccable. In addition to the website, they manage our Google Ads campaigns and SEO. Honestly, everything has worked very well. The campaigns bring in good leads and have us well positioned on Google and Bing. They are very professional but also very approachable, always explaining everything clearly. I recommend them without hesitation.

Bilingual SEO FAQ

What is bilingual SEO?

It’s optimizing a site to rank in two languages, with each version researched, written and measured on its own, and the two connected through hreflang tags so Google shows each searcher the right one.

Do you translate the content or adapt it?

We adapt it in most cases. Literal translation works for text that must say exactly the same thing, like legal pages; service pages and FAQs work better rewritten with the terms Spanish-speaking readers use. The table above sums up when to use each approach.

Do you work on Eastern time?

Colombia is on UTC−5 all year: the same time as New York in winter and one hour behind in summer. Meetings fit comfortably inside your business day.

Do I need a separate domain for the Spanish version?

Usually not. One domain with a folder per language is typically the easiest to maintain; a separate domain makes sense when the Spanish brand is different. We decide with you based on your situation.

Do you have clients in New York?

We don’t have a published New York case, and we won’t show you another city’s results as if they were local. What we can do is review your current site and show you what it’s missing to work well in both languages.

Can I show up on Google Maps in New York if I serve customers remotely?

No. A Google Business Profile requires a location customers can visit, or service delivered where your customers are. If you serve people online, the work focuses on your site and the content in each language.
